Movie Review (Evan Almighty)
I can say i watched this with a very cynical train of thought. I expected Hollywood to get quite a bit wrong about the Christian faith, and to also poke fun of the things we believe are true. To my surprise however, The makers of Evan Almighty not only managed to get some things right, but the majority of what they said that was correct was said in a perfectly serious manner. Not only did the film show God's power and ability to be everywhere at once, it defended (in its own way) God's goodness, His Power, His control of all things, His interest in human's on a personal level, and most curious to me of all, His sovereignty. This last one makes me wonder about the makers because this last point is something even many who call themselves Evangelical Christians do not believe in God's sovereignty anymore. They have watered down Gods Righteousness and his Just place as the Judge of all things to a place of being our friend and someone who wants all to be saved, when in fact we can read in Romans 9 (and in countless other places) that God prepared, and has endured the presence of many vessels that were "prepared for destruction." Granted the movie did not go itself into this Biblical truth, it not only handled the faith with careful hands as it got its laughs, it presented a picture of God who is good, and also just. The most amazing point that the movie makes about God himself is also something that stunned me. In the movie, God (played by Morgan Freedman) is talking to Evan's wife, and she was questioning her husbands sanity and how God answers prayer.
In all, Evan Almighty is fun, the jokes are in good taste, the jokes are not against the faith as much as they are against the response of the unbelieving masses. In short, I award Evan Almighty, a 9 stars out of Ten.
